Fuel transfer problems

I have a craftsman dyt4000 that has what I thought was fuel pump issues. When the fuel line is unhooked from the carb it pumps fine. But when hooked up it won't pump the fuel from the tank. I can see this happening as my fuel filter is clear. So I'm now left to think it might be something with the carb. It runs great until the fuel filter dries up. Yes I have unscrewed the gas cap to release vapor lock. Can anyone give me some suggestions. Thanks.

You said when hooked up it won't pump fuel then it runs great till fuel filter is dry.
So is this happening when first started up or after a few minutes?
When this happens if you pull fuel line to carb does fuel pump fuel out when restarting?

When testing fuel pump keep fuel line level like it's going to carb, some people like to position fuel line down where gravity may bias the results.

When the fuel filter is full it will run great for 15 min or so. During this time you can see the gas draining from the fuel filter until empty. For some reason it will not pull new fuel into the filter. When you unhook the line from the carb everything works like it should. This is a electric pump, I bought it after thinking there may have been vacuum issues. The same issue still exists. Thanks for your response.

    Okay, I see.
Do you have a link to the pump?
I know you tried unscrewing gas cap but did you try taking it off?

Airtex E8016S is the pump. Did not have the cap totally off. I can try that tomorrow.
