Cutting blade clutch cable question

I have a 42" gear mower.  My clutch cable is not releasing the power take off when I move the cable handle.  The head of the cable is loose under the control panel next to steering wheel.  Must I reconnect the head off the cable or can I?  Or do I have to replace the entire cable?

Thanks
Roy

Can you give us model number? If the cable broke inside a swaged fitting replace the cable.

I have an Ariens 936060, 42" twin blade.  The cable seems to be disconnected at the top, where the cable knob is attached to the plastic end.  The cable is not broken anywhere.  Engaging the PTO with the exterior control lever, and starting the mowing, and works fine.  Using the exterior control lever to disengage the PTO, the PTO continues operating.
