23hp Vanguard oil leak

I have a 23hp Vanguard (386777 0122-E1) that has oil on the right side valve cover. From my previous questions in other posts I think I have a blown head gasket. The oil level is good. There is some grey/blue smoke when I start the mower. I pulled the plugs and they are black and smell of gas. I pulled the dip stick and the oil smells of gas as well. Does this sound like a head gasket issue? If yes, is there a rebuild kit I can buy. I'm having trouble finding it. Also, should I replace the rings, and push rods while I have the motor apart.

Thanks for any help.

Scott

It sounds more like the engine is flooded. The carburetor inlet needle is not sealing, go there first. You may also want to install an inline fuel shut off, just remember to use it after shutting down and open before starting.

Can I check the needle without buying a gasket kit for the carb? I don't want to take it apart if I need the kit to put it back together.

    Thanks

You should be alright if you don't tear the gasket.

Along with the above suggestions, you may have blow-by/bad piston rings, cracked/hole in pistonhead, scored cylinderwall(s). Could be running TOO RICH - black gassy plugs = not good. Could be burning oil, but that often can leave white-ish deposits on plugs. Gas in oil/crankcase = BAD (back to bad rings), reduces lubrication.
    THEN ... cracked/warped head or block ...
So, while ya got it apart ya might as well consider checking & being prepared to replace rings, cylinder sleeves, push rod BEARINGS - but maybe not push rods unless they're knocking.
Watch - it'll probably be sumthin simple & cheap!
