installing float bowl gasket on Sabaru log splitter engine

I have an Airens log splitter with a Robins Sabaru engine.  The float bowl has been leaking because  the rubber gasket ring is not sealing.  This gasket is difficult to seat properly without ruining the rubber gasket when reattaching the metal float bowl.  Are there any special techniques that can be used to protect the rubber ring from being bent or squeezed out of shape upon  re-installation of bowl?

It must have been, he hasn't been back. That post is over a year old.
