'85 Gravely w/10hp Kohler doesn't want to run

I have an '85 model Gravely walk behind electric start with a 10hp Kohler model M10S.  The battery has been dead for a while (yes, I know I need to get a new one) but I've always jumped it off, and the tractor runs fine.  Now, when I jump it off and disconnect the jumper cables, the engine dies.  I'm thinking that there may be something amiss with the ignition.  Solenoid is fine.  I'm thinking that without the engine providing the current for the spark plug, a new battery would be drained pretty quickly.  The engine parts manual for the ignition lists a module ignition w/diode, a rectifier/regulator, and a kit/stator, any of which might or might not be the problem.  Any ideas on what the problem might be?

On this engine spark plug should keep firing unless grounded. Easy test would be to disconnect kill wire from ignition module. You then will not be able to turn off with key unless you touch kill wire to ignition coil or shut off fuel supply.

Here's a link to the service manual. ServiceManual Section 8 covers electrical. She should stay running with a dead battery. Make sure your rectifier is putting out 14 vdc when the motor is running to power the lights, etc since the battery is dead.
