Need help with OLD Sears Craftsman Shredder / Bagger using 6 HP Tecumseh engine.

Hi All. New to forum but glad to be here! Anyway, for reason's to long to get into, I have to get an OLD  Wood Shredder / bagger (model # 2 ? 2 - 27006) that has apparently has a Tecumseh 6 HP L-Head engine. From help I received from others, and research on the internet, I am thinking the Tecumseh engine is model # V60-70257H??? If I am wrong I will defer to those here who know much more about these things. Anyway, I believe the carburetor is an old diaphragm type instead of a more recent bowl/float type. Again, please feel to correct or advise if I am off track. I didn't get any history at all on the shredder but since the fuel tank looks dry, I am assuming it hasn't run in a while. Therefore, I want to clean out the tank and carburetor of all the old gas and gunk (perhaps replace the condenser, old hoses, ect), as well as replace the oil and the . Or can i just get by cleaning out the fuel tank and try starting it with some new gas?  I can't find any manual for this unit so if anyone has one, or knows of one, that would be great! I could really use some help with getting this thing running. I can pull the starter rope and the shredder blade turns so I know the engine isn't seized. So I am hoping someone can offer some suggestions and sources to help me get this old motor working. I guess first off, am I correct that this is a Tecumseh 6 HP engine model # V60-70257H? If so, is there a rebuild kit for this carburetor? Or even better, is it possible to swap it out with a newer bowl/float type?If it is possible to swap it out, what are my choice(s)? Does anyone know the Oil type and amount this motor takes and how much? The  in it has no markings I can see. Does anyone know which one to get? Any suggestions on how to clean out the gas tank? Let me say in advance: Thanks for all assistance and advice!

I would clean tank out and put some gas in it, replace oil. Then try to start, if doesn't start check spark, if spark is good, dribble some fuel into carb throat.

Thanks everybody!  This old unit has a diaphragm type carburetor so I don't know if there is a way to drip some gas in to prime it. I am still trying to find a way to identify the carburetor so I can at least get the correct rebuild kit. Anyone know where Tecumseh put the identifying marks on these old diaphragm carburetor? I could also use some help adjusting the carburetor correctly once I get it rebuilt.

Again, thanks again for all the help I have received.

HI everyone, and thanks for the help. The carburetor on the Tecumseh that I have doesn't appear to be the same type shown in the illustration above. I will post a diagram of the engine I believe that I have on my shredder, and although it is hard to see, it shows the diaphragm carburetor. [image]file:///C:/Users/The%20Packing%20Box/Downloads/Tecumseh-Engine-Parts-Manual-V60-70257H%20(3).pdf[/image]Hopefully someone will recognize the carburetor that is on my shredder and be able to tell me where to get a rebuild kit.

Seems to me that unless you are into restoring this as an antique, you are better off finding a good used mower engine of the same approximate horsepower, because that engine being a vertical shaft unit, the bolt holes and shaft sizes are pretty universal, so you could save yourself some headaches by just popping another engine on it.
