B&S 1982 3 1/2 HP Vertical Model 93502-0343-01 Valve Guides

Hi, I have the above engine apart and I want to get the valve guides right. I do not have the tools and I can not find a dealer who wants to work on this engine. I would not call it worn out, as the bore is near perfect; I just want to be certain the guides are good (or good enough).  I can move the valves a slight amount side-to-side with the springs out. I do not have enough experience with these to tell if this indicates wear significant enough to warrant renewing the guides. Mu gut feeling is they are good enough for the purpose as this is a "restoration" of a Yazoo mower will will be lightly used if that. Please advise if you can.

Slight play is normal, if there is no wiggle the valve will seize in the guide as soon as the engine gets hot. I learned that when I didn't finish ream new guides.

As Roy said these needs a little clearance. For the 296676 exhaust it is .004" under .250" (1/4") and the valve guide is finished reamed to .250" so a 1/4" drill or pin punch that mics out to .250" can be use as gauge. Now Briggs 1/4" valve tool has go/no go gauge in it but I have valve guide problems that passes the test gauge test.

Most shops don't even want do it as they consider it a waste of their time.

Years ago we did them as part of a major tuneup but with shop labor rates and the low cost of new equipment it simply can no longer be justified. Replace the engine on higher end equipment, deep six the $199 mower. The ohv cylinder heads are not serviceable, if the guides are worn replace the head.

The only ones I doing valve guides most times are on the L-heads now is the horizontals. I don't even see push mowers coming into the shop anymore as Wal-mart and other are selling as little as $130 around here.I don't why I ever brought the 5/16 valve repair kit never use it in 8 yrs. The 1/4 set I had to buy extra reamers for due the aftermarket guides I was using but they are no longer available.

Plus with the valve guides nearing $10 for a small brass tube and the shipping charges is making them expensive to even get the parts. If it wasn't for putting them on stock orders or my case making my own from a 36" length of tubing that only costs under $10, I would not replacing them on verticals either. Of course there are a few that use a different metal version that I must keep around.

The OHV guides are non replaceable simply because the manufacture won't supply them. I had to replace several heads last year due guide movement problems. Thinking about trying knurling the guides as they were fine other than getting loose in the heads. I don't think just staking them on one end will hold up.
