Generac GP6500E help

Hey gang,
New to the forum, I’m Dave from Philly. I own a Generac GP6500E and I can’t get it to start. Found her in a dumpster, missing a few parts. Right off the bat, I installed a new carb, new fuel line and inline filter, from an amazon rebuild kit. I tried starting it with old fuel inside it. Clearly a bad idea but let’s keep going. Drained the tank, cleaned it out of rust and particles, blew the fuel lines with compressed air, put new gas in. Drained the oil and added new oil. Cleaned the new carb. Also checked the spark plug out of its hole and when grounded on the block casting it gets a pretty good blue spark. The spark plug is new by the way. When I try starting with choke on, it just sort of gurgles. Sometimes it sounds like it will cough once or twice but never cranks. After a few pulls, I’ll open the choke and crank some more. I’ll get flashes of flame from the open carb intake but it won’t turn over. I’ll keep cranking like this with the flame flashes and then it will backfire. I pulled the flywheel and the key is intact. I don’t know what to do next. Any thoughts gents?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

    Have you checked the valves?

Not yet, I don’t know what to look for. Do you have to pull the head to check them?

Remove the valve cover to determine if they are moving when you pull the rope.

Did you change the oil to the right weight it calls for 30w I normally run 10w30 rotella diesel in mine and check the plug gap? I believe .030 is what it should be sometimes they get changed when they get bounced around in shipping.
