Ran oil dry on Craftsman tractor - Freed up - Now turns over, but won't fire up

1st, I admit my stupidity.  Ran fine last season.  1st start this season it started right up, but started to putt and surge and make sounds.  Was running at very low rpm's when it locked up.  Thought I was screwed, but it freed up very easily.  I filled with oil and put new filter on and new sparkplugs.  Now it will freely turn over and over, but will not fire up.  I have spark on both plugs.  An adviser told me I may have burned up the fuel pump - $20 later it isn't that.  Any other ideas to try myself before I take it to a shop and decide if it is worth fixing?  The Tractor is a Craftsman 18.5 Model 917.270762  The Motor is a B&S 18.5 HP OHV I/C Platinum Intek - on sticker: Family YBSXS.7242V & 274729

When I pull up your craftsman numbers I get briggs model 407777-0121-E5. The family numbers are not the model #'s for the briggs.

So will it fire up if you spray some carb cleaner into carb or some fuel?

I do a compression check as you may have broken the rods. And if it hasn't it will as the aluminum transfer to the crank journals will only get worse even with oiling.

I sprayed carb cleaner in sparkplug hole, screwed in quick and no fire up
