Kohler Aegis Head Bolt Holes Stripped

Blew one and possibly two head bolts on my 25hp Aegis while running. (Threads are stripped in one hole and bolt is a little loose in another.) Is Helicoil the best fix? What is the thread pattern of the course end of the bolts? It’s courser than M8x2.5 and Helicoil doesn’t appear to make an M8x1.5. Much obliged!

Your screw pitch comment doesn't make a lot sense.

The IPLs are indicating M8-1.25 studs which is the standard DIN size. There is no M8-2.50 pitch and if there was it would prohibited expense for the custom taps and dies. The closest 2.5 is a M18. M8 standards are 1.00 (fine [French]) and 1.25 (coarse [DIN]).

Since it appear coarser than 1.25 it might be that someone has already oversized the mounting holes. Take the current stud to a local hardware store for sizing.

Now M10 comes in 1.50 and M12 comes in 1.75 coarse pitches.

Thanks for your reply. I’m currently away from my notes, but I think I meant to say the bolts are courser than 1.25. Auto parts store couldnt identify the thread, but suspected 1.5. Nobody else has opened the engine since I bought it new. I’ll take to my neighborhood machine shop in the morning, but had hoped to get it back together today.

Yes the machine shop should a metric thread pitch gauge. As auto part stores most in the US are incapable of doing metrics.

This something they should be able to do easily only if they took the time to have the tools needed. It is the reason I had to order my metric tap and die instead purchasing locally. Even now when I need metric screws I have to order them as no one locally stock them.

Yup, they’re 1.5 thread. Thanks arot, Mr. Kohler, for using an odd size that I can’t get a helicoil for. A machine shop is making me some studs and tapping the block accordingly.

Tnx for the report back on the size. I make a note in my service manual about the size. Odd that they used a size that is hard to get.
