White LT125- B&S motor question

I have a lawn tractor, (white LT125) with a Briggs and Stratton 12 HP 281707-0411-01 motor on it. The motor essentially blew up about a week ago, and I was hoping for some insight on a replacement. I checked with a local small engine shop and he told me that the motor is obsolete and that the newer version would be $800, plus labor to install. Surely I should be able to retrofit a used motor for a fraction of the cost, but it's unlikely I will be able to find that exact motor. What do I need to look for to replace this engine and get my small tractor running again.

Note- By "blew up" I mean it sounded like a 30-06 went off and the motor shut off, and I noticed a crack in the block, with oil seeping out. I am very new to small engines, let alone rebuilding one. I'm just to cheap to pay $800 to fix a $200 tractor. And I would love to learn and fix this myself. Thanks for reading.

The direct replacement for the 281707-0411-01 is the 21R707-0011-G1 per Briggs Power Portal and it lists for $495.00. Now 21R707 is rated as a 10.5 hp engine per the new hp rating system.

What engine are they specing for the replacement?

I'm not sure exactly and I deleted the message. If I remember correctly, he said I would have to go with a 18hp. I may be in luck though, I think I found an exact match about 2 hours away.
