Did you disturb the magneto when you had the points and condenser out? Other than a sheared flywheel key that is the only way the ignition timing could be out of whack. Did you remove the cam? If you did, with the head off rotate the flywheel and watch the valves. The exhaust valve will close as the intake opens (valve overlap). This should happen at top dead center, if not the cam needs to be properly timed.
