Homelite XL-12 chainsaw from mid 80's. Ignition module failure.

I could not find a replacement module anywhere. Finally left the saw in a box out in the shed
but took module out and left it on the kitchen table. Gave it a hard look every time I walked
by. Checked it with volt/ohm meter and determined the internal diode had failed in the closed
position so was now just a wide spot in the primary winding. Found an old diode from a
junked lawnmower and wired it on to the ground wire of the module and then to ground. My
primary winding now had a working diode, it was just at the opposite end of the winding.
The XL-12 runs like a Swiss watch... H.
