Preventative maintenance would be a good start.

Mulching can only be done when certain conditions exist. He is the Pacific NorthWet, the mulch window is about 45-60 days in July and August. Every year we get a pack of broken belts, bent blades from the wet grass having no where to go.

I did not make this crap up, it comes from ODPE folks. (Outdoor Power Equipment)

Ambient temperature has to be above 68 degrees in a 24 hour period.
NO rain, or watering for 72 hours.
Only mulch no more than a half inch at a time.
If you are spitting little green balls of wadded up grass out the back of your deck like a rabbit, you are wrong.

I dont care what the (insert brand name here) salesperson said. These are the plain and simple facts about mulching.

That has been my experience with mulching. So many want to do it to eliminate raking or bagging but it has to be done properly to produce a healthy lawn.
As Mike said preventative maintenance is key. Also ensure the lawn is free of debris, dog's/kid's toys and flag obstacles such as stumps and water shut offs. Nothing ruins the afternoon faster than a bent crank.
