B&S 283707-0117-01...

Ref;

https://www.lawnmowerforum.com/showt...83707?p=303201

This is what happens when I start the mower from the last time I ran it...

Used to be..Would have to turn the basket on top of the engine to get it unstuck...loosen up. Then it would turn over..When it finally started to catch, it throws out black smoke, runs rough and then after about 20 seconds, it smooths out..runs great. Shut it off and it starts right up..runs smooth.

Now..throws out black smoke, runs rough and will not smooth out..Oil seeping out of the tube breather that goes from the carb to the air cleaner.

Oil stick shows good reading when engine runs like before...Now, Oil shows up and down the stick 3 or 4 inches...Does not line up between add and full marks...

I guess if its shot, I'd like to know what the problem is..valves? stuck choke?
thx..

This is some of the advice...
Repairable, yes. Two things bad. Carb needs to be rebuilt and head gasket needs to be replaced.
--------------------
I've msg into jacks small...for the proper head gasket and carb kit...

If the oil is higher than normal it is a sign that the needle valve/seat is leaking. As far the carburetor we would which carburetor you have. If it is the Walbro we still need narrow it down further as there was several version used on that engine.

The head gasket is pn 271866S.

Needle  valve/seat is leaking..as in the carb where the float opens and closes the gas flow?

At a loss to tell whether it is a nikki or walbro...the nikki has a kit that shows used on for the 283707-0117-01.

I'm gonna pull the head off for a new gasket and while doing that I'll take off the carb...I think I've looked before, for id on the carb without any luck..Any features that distinguish one from the other?
    thx..redgetter..

The Nikki will have Nikki on it. It also have a one piece curved inlet tube where as Walbro has a right angle two piece inlet.

Now on the Walbro the need info is usually on the flange to mounts to the intake. Maybe a full part number or something like "97" excluding the quotes. There is five different Walbro carburetor depending on which LMT carburetor you have.

But Nikki is easier as there is only one kit for it.

Also note on the inlet tubes the Nikki isn't replaceable but the Walbro is and it is a good thing as many techs and DIYers thinks these are meant to rotate which are not and if rotated they can develop leaks or break.

Got the carb off...Is a walbro...
    > Has the number 3 above the name...
    > Number 3251 on flange c/t outlet.Number 5 on same flange, opp side.
    > 5-4993 on side above fuel inlet
    > LMT..no number, on side of case...

Hope this helps to nail down the correct carb kit..

I am beginning which carburetor you have too.
These are the LMT versions the IPL lists. None of numbers you listed are present. I do know the 5-4993 is the LMT base carburetor before the Briggs changes.

According to Briggs there is no direct replacement; therefore, whatever you replace it with will require mods.

They will also need the date code, according to the Briggs dealer site there was a running change to the shaft length.

I spent some money on the trans-axle of the dixon 361..after I had bought a snapper ztr..
So it is in good shape since I only use it for opening up the lawn..Ditches. And it cuts very
well..better quality cut than the snapper. So I'd like to keep it..Took the carb off..Took all
the accessible jets off..soaked everything in carb cleaner for15 mnts..Blew it off with comprsd
air..etc..Put it all back together. After I replc the head gasket, which is in the mail..I'll see
if it will run. If not, there are a few new engines that look like they'd work..have to do something
with the gas tank...on left side, where most the mufflers seem to be on the new stuff I'm looking
at..If that proves to be too much, will start looking for a new 36" cut mower..Like the toggle
steering..but only country clipper offers it...smallest is a 42" cut...
    Thx for all the information..redgetter...

Replaced head gasket, cleaned out the fins while I had the covers off..Took all the jets out of the carb that I could, soaked in carb cleaner for 15 minutes. Blew off with air hose. Replaced needle and seat, bowl and O ring. Fired right up, ran smoke free after I got the mixture right. Need to adjust the gaps on the disk/cone...Good to go cut grass.

    Had great information..;-)
