Repair question for Cub Cadet wide area 33" walk behind lawn mower

I recently had to replace my right hand brake cable, part#946-04606, on my Cub Cadet wide area 33" walk behind lawn mower.  I replaced nothing else.  I have replaced this cable a year and a half ago and did not have any problems, so I am pretty confident that I put the brake cable on correctly and I know how to reassemble the lawn mower.  When I put the right hand lever assembly back on, part#687-02426, the cable was so tight that just putting the screw (not even tightening it) back into the lever assembly caused the brake ever so slightly to move that it disengaged the brake.  I called the manufacturer, Cub Cadet, for help, but I was not given a solution.  I was told that the brake cable is now designed to be 1/8th of an inch shorter.  I need help.  I do not know what to do to keep the brake from engaging when I reassemble the lawn mower.  I need my brakes to work!  Any help is appreciated.
