23 HP liquid cooled Kohler engine

I have an older craftsman riding mower with a liquid cooled kohler engine on it. it runs but has many hours on it and smokes.
I would replace the rings but can't find parts. are there parts available? Family    1KHXS.6742GV.  displ.   674
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Appears that you have an AEGIS LV675 but would need the model and spec number from engine tag as the what you posted is only the family info which doesn't gives us the needed info.

Just be aware that Kohler changed the piston in 2006 and only piston and rings assemblies are available now. On top that you will need which size you have as if standard or if is one of the two oversizes that they still have available.

The only identification tag only shows engine family number and displacement. I have some pics I will forward. is there other possible identification numbers on the engine? how can I upload pics?
Im new to this forum.

The label should be located on the engine shroud near the dipstick and starter. Here is an example of a blank label. Since already posted the family this label should be present on the engine. About mid point of the label is the model, spec, and serial numbers.

Post your own images you need to upload them to an image hosting site like Imgur, copy the image link, and then using the picture+ button on the reply screen here insert the image(s).

I found a tag on the head on the side where the starter is. Unfortunately the information is unreadable. I looked at an angle and there appears to be an lv675. Nothing else is readable. the year is a 2001 by the serial number on the mower. 080201A001011. Thats the best I can do at present. hopefully we can come up with the proper parts to put new rings, head gaskets, intake and exhaust and case gaskets in it. Thanks for all your help in advance.

Looks like an electrolux manufacture engine. I will take it apart and compare parts. I see only piston kits are available.

Okay, according KohlerPlus there were three specs used on the Craftsman/AYP/Electrolux/Husqvarna mowers.

LV675-851509 Electrolux
LV675-851513 Husqvarna
LV675-851516 Electrolux

So I recommend you compare parts of each, most will be the same but may be some that are different too.

Also further reading the PB-246 issued on the pistons, it was a change to how oil ports were designed. This change was to help with start up smoking problem the even new engines had.

I have the engine dissasembled and measured the piston skirt. appears its 80mm. I found piston kits 24 874 34-S
assuming I am correct. the original pistons are std. compression rings are either wrong from manufacture or very worn. there is a ring gap of more than .140" I have never seen such a large gap on rings.
Question: will a standard water cooled motor head gasket be ok? can't find any LV675 engine that shows a different head gasket for the original 80mm bore.
Looks like all i need is piston kits, intake gaskets, head gaskets to get it back running. any thoughts?

.140 is definitely out of spec. The standard ring end gaps are
Top Ring ........... 0.180/0.430 mm (0.0071/0.0169 in.)
Middle Ring ....... 0.250/0.460 mm (0.0098/0.0181 in.)

Now the question is how much wear is on the cylinder? Is it worn heavily, ovalled, and/or tapered? All of which would require oversizing with a rigid hone to true up the cylinder.

Choose the closest oversize that not over that oversize; otherwords, if the cylinder is for example .0031" then you resize to the next oversize or 0.010".

Available oversizes but double check availability as some sizes are NLA.
0.08 mm (0.003 in.), 0.25 mm (0.010 in.), or 0.50 mm (0.020 in.).

thanks, next step is to mic the bore and see how bad it is before buying pistons.

Got a change to run the numbers.

Only the .25 mm (.010) PN2487436-S superseded to 2487456-S
and  the .50 mm (.020) PN2487437-S superseded to 2487445-S are available.

I checked the bore, very good condition very round. honed and installed new pistons. looks good. waiting for head gaskets and intake gaskets. should last for another 20 years. this mower is still a good one.
I still can't believe the ring gap i found on the old rings. it was so unusual to see that. I think the factory installed the wrong size rings. The new replacement rings fit perfect with perfect gap. Newer pistons will make sure not to smoke on start up. Happy camper here.
I have another Kohler engine
FAMILY WKHXS.6742GB
MODEL CV675S
SPEC NO 75532
DISPL 674
SERIAL 3017516411
Can't seem to find the rings for it. looks like another piston kit needed. will need head gaskets too.
I have intake gaskets. also wanting to replace muffler with newer type like on the water cooled engine. I think I can find that part set up. any help with the proper piston rings or piston kit would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

Head Gasket 24 841 02-S

For style A ring use Style B piston kits.

Oh my goodness,
I ordered a ring set according to the numbers you provided for a std bore "80mm"
24 108 26-S what i received was a mix match of rings that would never work.
The top compression ring was too small in outside diameter, 1/8" ring gap.
The second compression ring was proper diameter with acceptable ring gap but wrong ID
The oil rings were too narrow for my pistons.
I bought them on ebay and I am asking for a return. Part number on box was right but rings were in celophane sealed packages. Not what I am used to seeing for Kohler parts.
i guess you live and learn.
May have to buy complete piston kits to fix.
being it is the same bore and hp as the liquid cooled engine I'm wondering if the same piston kit would fit properly?
Oh it shows 24hp on the air filter but all parts look up state 23hp.
Let me know what I should do. Thanks in advance for all the help.
