Blown Head Gasket

I have a 23hp Briggs Vanguard that blew a head gasket on #1 cylinder, there's also a burn mark on the head and cylinder. I'm wondering how much "burn" a new gasket will stop and when I should consider resurfacing the face on the head and cylinder.

Welcome! Lay a straight edge across the burn mark, there should not be daylight showing. If there is try cleaning it up with a block and emery paper.

Thanks Roy, a straight edge doesn't show any light but I can feel it with my fingernail, do it's not too deep. I also used a good gasket with a thin film of grease and tightened the heads back on for a leak down test - I'm showing only 20% leak on each cylinder. This tells me that if I flatten out the burn mark using your suggestion, I should be good to go. What grit would you recommend I use to finish the clean-up?
