Ignition coil testing question

H I have a briggs vertical shaft v twin and there is (suddenly) no spark. I exposed the coil and disconnected the little 3rd wire coming from it, assuming that it was the shutoff ground wire. I unplugged the spark wires and connected one to my spark tester and connected the tester to engine ground. cranked it up and no spark. is that the right way to test it? Thanks

Something not right here. Briggs v-twins normal only have the plug wire and kill wire to each of the coils. Here you sure you have a v-twin or is it an twin opposed engine?

Please model and type numbers of the engine.

right you are! it has opposing cylinders, i believe L Head is what they call them. No way to find model tonight but it's the second of these on my mower in last 10 years and they both had the same ignition system. please see attached and attached in second reply( could
n't get both to attach in same reply?)

Since it is the opposed engine and what you have done it the only way to test it then you have a bad ignition module.
