Looking for a backup mower while I fix my Toro with bad ignition coil and hard to get to

Im looking for a back mower I can use while I fix my Toro Groundmaster 120 52" that has a bad ignition coil on one of the cylinders and its a bitch to get to. They don't give you any room on the sides to take the Cowling off so you can get to the coil. Looks like
Im going have to lift the motor up vertical to be able to take the cowling off. Dam that is a pain.

So looking at some used older mowers maybe a 42 " Craftsman, Husqvarna, Toro, Troy Built, Arien or some other brand. Would be nice
for something front motor easy to work on. No zero turn stuff. In the cheap used mower brands,, what seems to be ok
and holds up pretty good. Just used around the house.

Cheap and good don't belong in the same sentence. You get one or the other. How many times do you anticipate using it? Remember too that a lower priced consumer mower will never give you the quality of cut you are used to. An older Toro would be a good choice but they are prized and priced accordingly. Same with Ariens although the box store models are made by Husqvarna which would get you by as long as it has been cared for. I wouldn't give a Troy Bilt or any other MTD derivative a second glance.

Ok thanks. Will see what I can find. Not going to mow that much with it, just around the house 1/4 acre till I get my
Toro Groundmaster 120 52" fixed with the bad ignition coil which I wish was easier to get to.

I would have to disagree about the MTDs mowers. I used both the Husqvarna line including the AYP models and MTD and prefer the MTDs but my current MTD does have a souped engine now so can go through some pretty tall grass.

For small places they are find it is when you get into larger than you need a better mower. But I got to admit I was cutting my 6 acres with a Bolens 38" and just last went to a Yard Machines 42" cut.

If my JD 650 was still running I probably be cutting 4 acres with the 4 foot rotary mower.

Will keep the MTD models in mind. I have around 5 1/2 acres and cut it with my Toro Groundmaster 120 52" till I just lost a ignition coil on one cylinder. Its a bitch to get to. So I thought I would pick up a used smaller used mower to just cut around the home till I get the Toro going again. One local guy has a Craftsman 42" 16hp for sale but 16hp doesn't seem to alot of HP
but maybe it would be ok.

That is more than adequate for a 42" deck. If you are seriously considering it make sure it was well maintained, no point in sinking money into a worn out pos.

The Craftsman 42" is a Looking around it seems you can parts for them from many places, thats good and the prices seem to be cheap too. Might take a look at it in next few days. Im just going to trade a Miller 225 Stick welder for it if it looks and runs good. I just put a AD out Im looking to trade the welder for a simple mower used for my backup mower. I might have some more offers to come in.

I found a Ariens precision v2 for $700 maybe that would be a good back up mower or maybe make it my main mower and sell the old Groundmaster 120.
