onan gennerator blow back

I have an onan gen set in a motorhome. was not getting fuel so I changed the carb then it tries to start, but soon blows fuel back out the carb. I suspect a burnt valve?? open to ideas before I pull it out.

I haven't worked on any these genesets but you need it where you can access it. I am thinking these are L-head engine so the valve clearance probably closed up from wear which leading to valve not closing fully and fast enough.
