21hp V-Twin Craftsman B&S engine - on a DYT4000, with a go issue.

Hi... I was wondering if you guys/gals might be kind enough to try and answer a question for me?
I have a 21hp V-Twin Craftsman B&S engine - on a DYT4000, with a go issue.

When you put it into forward, and let off the break, the belt sequels like crazy and it does not want to move.
(sometimes it will move a bit or try to move, most times not)

But if you pull the break petal all the way up by hand, the squealing goes away and the mower takes off. Once you do this, it will go for a bit and have to do it again. Other times you have to hold it continuously or every 30 seconds or so.

I tried putting a spring on the end of the petal linkage, pulling the linkage shaft toward the front of the mower but then it did not move at all, even though the linkage rod was all the way forward like it would seem to be when you pulled the petal all the way up by hand.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Johnny

PS - Brakes are not working. Brake disk has about -1/16 to 1/8 play in it (side to side), so pins are not pushing metal plate into pad. Simple adjustment I can do.

Sounds like belt slippage. One three things to check.
  1. Worn drive belt.  Note the belt size is important. Belts can hand measure the correct length when worn and still be bad as the v sides wear down. Here I use a v-belt measuring tool that take this into account. Model of the mower from the serial number will determine which is used. Several version of DYT 4000 are out there.
  2.  Check both the flat and v idler pulleys for bad bearings.
These are the common causes of no motion drive.

On brakes the pads may be worn out though most times an adjustment cures it. Also those pins do seize in the caliper from time to time.

Thank you AVB...

I will check these things.

Thank you,

PS - if there was a belt issue, how would pulling up on the brake pedal fix issue?

Over rides the normal spring tension of the swinging idler arm and forces the belt to be tighter in the v groove of pulleys even though the belt is already worn too thin. Even though the belt is cloth cover it can actually wear metal pulleys v-groove.

The drive belt is listed as 140294 superseded to 532140294 (1/2 x 82.25) though Searspartdirect site says the belt is 1/2 x 82. If you choose to try to use an aftermarket belt just be aware they are not always the size indicated on the belt sleeves. My aftermarket got to where every 1/2" belt was coming in at least an inch short so I had to quit using them.

Your awesome AVB, thank you.

If the spring tension is the issue (because of stretched belt) is there somewhere underneath (on brake/clutch pedal linkage that a spring would make it work? At least until I get my next Disability check on the first.

Thanks,
Johnny

Another thing I am confused about. There are two belts. One for the blade drive system and the main belt that connects to the main drive system. (motor shaft)

(in other words, if I completely removed the deck, it seems I would still have the same issue because the squealing only happens when you let your foot off the brake pedal to move forward or backwards)

The blade belt is not the problem (it seems to me) so where is the tension applied to the main drive belt that in on the motor itself?

Did I ask that right?

Thanks again,
Johnny
