Briggs & Stratton EXi 625 blowing white smoke

Hello forum family,

I have a relatively new Black Max mower that I bought in June. It has a Briggs & Stratton EXi 625 engine. Saturday I turned it over to clean out the underneath of grass. I'm sure I turned it over the wrong direction because I didn't know there was a right direction (I do now). After that, when I started it up, it blew out a cloud of white smoke for a good few seconds. Now whenever it is running, even at idle, it has a steady white haze and a smell added to an exhaust that last week was odorless and colorless.

Could this be a headgasket? This model says it doesn't ever need an oil change, but it seems there is some oil potentially leaking into the cylinder somehow.

Any chance of posting a full S/N for the engine? I was trying to find information on the Briggs site like where it says "Never needs oil change".

You probably got fuel into the crankcase.  You didn't blow a head gasket..

Drain all the oil, tilting so the oil filler is the lowest point of the filler neck.

Re-fill with fresh oil.

"Never needs oil change" has been used since around 2015 (just fixed a Briggs with that sticker on a 2015 model).

Not sure why it did not show but only minutes after I posted the question about the Never change oil I did find the page on it. Wonder if part of the reasoning for coming out with that was the fact that too many consumers either did not do it anyhow or they used too much or the wrong oil. That along with the low amount of hours most of these see  probably not that critical.

Now my push mowers with Briggs engines have to be 30 or more years old and do get new oil once a year with maybe one top up during the season!

Dunno if you watch "Taryl" (on You Tube) but he goes over the Briggs marketing and reasons about the "no oil change".
He's quite the character and entertaining but EXTREMLY knowledgeable about small engines, etc...

Hey guys,

Thanks for the thoughtful replies. I let it sit the rest of the week to see if that would help. Started it up today (it's running a bit rough I noticed. I don't think it was as vibraty before as it is now? Anyway, it looked clear and I thought it was good, but after about 45-60 seconds of running the white smoke came back.

My next step is to take SRTsFZ6's advice. I'll go buy oil for it while I'm out today. I did check the air filter and it's a little dirty, but it doesn't look like oil dirty, just dust and dirt dirty.

KShansen that is the correct model you found. Here is the full serial number and model:

S/N#:1909207738545
E/M#:093J020137F1

I'm told it has a three year warranty on it, but I don't know how to go about contacting a dealer who does B&S warranty work and I'm not sure I can find my proof of purchase. It's fairly new, I think early June or late May I bought it.

Hello. Sometimes the origins of the engine can cause problems. It's happened to me a few times too. I'll change them again. What about your problem? Maybe you want to check these out too. I couldn't understand if the product is 4 motors or 2 motors. If you could provide a little more detail, maybe we could help. White smoke can of course be a sign that something is not right. Kind regards...

Do you mean a TWO STROKE or FOUR STROKE engine?

It's a 4 stroke if that's your question..
