8hp B&S Cyclone Rake motor

Hello!  This pull-cord start motor suddenly stopped while working/running and now can barely pull the cord (too much compression.  Changed the plug, but no help.  Had just changed the oil.  Any ideas appreciated!

You claim the reason it turns over hard is "too much compression". Did you try turning it over with plug out? If there is a problem with compression it should turn over easy with plug out.

If it still turns over hard then problem could be something else like seized bearing in engine or a problem in the "rake".

"too much compression (with the plug in) meant it's almost impossible to pull the starter cord.
Once plug out, it pulls/turns over easily.  Ideas?

Well not 100% sure but if it's is a newer overhead valve, guess that would be less than 20 years old!, I would probably start by checking valve adjustments. Seems to be a common problem with them. Next I might be thinking about whether it had a decompression device built into the camshaft. I would need a full model and type number to look into that.
