Kohler sv-725 adjusted valves--popping through exhaust and no power

Ran fine for 2 minutes after adjusting valves while fixing oil leaks at valve covers. Started "popping" at right side cylinder through small downward-pointing port where exhaust pipe exits cylinder head. I am assuming that port is a compression release?? The popping is very rhythmic--about once a second at idle, 2-3 times a second at full speed. The pop is accompanied by a puff of air from the port.

If that is the compression release port, is it malfunctioning? Could a valve have slipped adjustment? It the port reacting to a severe miss from washing the engine down? Any ideas before I tear the newly sealed valve cover?

There's no separate ports for the compression release... The cam(usually exhaust), bumps open the cam during cranking.

What you are describing is a bad gasket between the head and muffler...It's blown and pushing exhaust out of it...

I think you are right. The valve timing setup would not blow air out of anywhere. I think the 'port" I'm seeing is just a nub in the casting by the exhaust tube. That's where the air shoots out when it "pops". A bad exhaust gasket should not cause the popping and low power however. And I only feel the air when it pops, not all the time.

Wondering if a blown head gasket ?

Your jumping way ahead of yourself.

Pull the muffler to head bolts and inspect the gasket for leaks.

Surmised it was not going to be exhaust gasket. That would blow out sideways and not straight down like I am feeling under the head. Popping quit when I pulled the spark plug wire on the right. No change in RPM and it ran smoother! Time to recheck the valves. Popping was due to the exhaust rocker stud coming loose from the right head, which then knocked the intake rocker sideways! (No sure why as I never un-torqued the stud.) Even with both valves closed it was sucking in enough mixture to ignite now and then--which quit igniting when I pulled the plug wire.

Still no power after putting valves all back together. No change in RPM if I unplugged the right spark. Engine stalled immediately if I unplugged the left. A quick dry compression showed 30psi lower compression on the right. It turned out the head gasket was blown on the bottom where I was feeling the shot of air. That is one of the cheapest looking head gaskets I've seen. I'm glad they have upgraded the new ones. It answers the question "should I replace both of them!"

Thanks for your help.
