HELP! Briggs and Stratton MTD riding mower electrical problem

I have an older(don't know the year) MTD riding mower. It was running good up until about 2 weeks ago. The solenoid appears to have melted. I went to my local Tractor Supply, bought another 3 terminal solenoid and installed it. When I connected the new battery back up, the spark plug wires/ignition coil started smoking and melting the small wire. I ordered a new ignition coil and bought a new ignition. I plugged the new coil on and wires onto the plugs. Hooked up the battery and all was going well. Once I plugged the ignition back in, it started smoking. I pulled the ignition out of the wiring harness ASAP and it stopped smoking. Any recommendations on where to look next? Is it possible the new solenoid is bad? Or is there a short somewhere that caused the previous solenoid to melt? I am attaching pictures of the model, old/new solenoid, and old/new ignition coil. Please help! Not sure where to start. I'm tempted to get a new wiring harness and re-wire the thing.

You are feeding power to the ignition. One wire should go from the battery, large terminal on the solenoid, to the B terminal on the switch. A second wire goes from the S terminal on the switch to the small terminal on the solenoid. It's possible your switch has failed, there should be no continuity between the M (magneto) terminal and the B.

What model mtd is this?
If I read this right then you have already replaced the ignition switch. If voltage is being applied to kill wire to coil then it will kill your new coil. You could have a short. I would unhook kill wire from coil and using multimeter in volts dc, test to see if voltage is on it. Note: if you start it then ignition switch, using key may not turn it off, may have to crimp off fuel supply.
