Techumseh H60 electronic ignition conversion.

Hello,
I'm hoping someone here can help me out with some info. I have an old, year unknown Ariens snowblower with a Techumseh 6hp engine. Engine model # is H60-75376M. I need points, but do not want to risk beating on the rusty flywheel to remove it.. Is it possible to eliminate the points by putting a electronic ignition coil from a newer engine on it? If so can anyone guide me to what coil will work?

I take it no one on this forum has ever substituted a coil with a magnetic pickup with the old points coil  on a small engine??  I've done it on Briggs engines, but this is a 1976 vintage Techumseh   H60 6hp and I only am looking for a coil that will bolt on that has a magnetic pickup on it. If anyone knows, please post what coil will work for my application.

If the ignition coil itself is still good convert using a Nova II ignitor or similar.

Does this require flywheel removal?  How is it installed?

If the coil is the internal type then yes as you got to disconnect the points from it. THe IPL is showing it has this type.
External coils are much easier access plus there was an electronic that could be used but this engine appears not to have the mounting bosses for an external setup.

Information on the older Tecumseh engines is sparse as they have been out for some time now and many of the Tecumseh techs are gone. I find references to support docs on your engine's coil setup but not able to find them.

The Nova II ignitor kit comes with the install instructions as many use it to replace points on old 2 cycles. I also use them to replace the current Kawasaki ignitors.

I'm curious as to just how does this unit know when to trigger the coil? The electronic coils have a magnetic pickup built in it. Whereas the old system uses points to know when to trigger the spark. Where do the wires on this little unit hook up to?
I'm going to try to post a pic of my engine with the fan shroud removed.

As the flywheel passes the coil a voltage and current is developed in the coil's primary winding which in turns triggers the ignitor electronics. If I not mistaken they use SCRs for the triggers. As for where it connects one wire goes to where the points trigger goes on the coil and the other goes to ground. It just you need to disconnect the old points for it to operate as intended. The universal has two wires, it is so can can used with either negative or positive ground.

Positive ground isn't too common anymore but at one time it was quite common. I have even on old PU trucks that had positive ground from the 1940's.

I hate to show my age, but there was a item called the Atom. This allowed you to run your engine that had points to remove the points and install the Atom.
Now where did I get it, it was from Stens.
It has been a long time ago, but do a investigation.
