Tecumseh 5 HP Gas engine ( Stalls when choke is turned off)

Hello,

Purchased a new carb from Jacks small engine. Installed with no issues. Started engine choke in Full position and when moving it halfway engine still runs, but turning it off it stalls shuts off. Also replaced muffler & air filter. Fuel line is pretty new. Any other suggestions would help.

Thanks,

Brian

What model tecumseh do you have or carb part#?
Most times if you have to use choke there is a restriction. Is tank clean and make sure fuel line is good.

Engine is  TECUMSEH H50-65472T. Order Carburetor from Jacks Smaall Engines Part # 632379A. Gas tank is plastic and looks clean. Fuel line about a year old. Bought Fuel line at Pep Boys. When replacing the carb, used new gasket and new choke post with butterfly. Made no adjustments to new Carb. Thx

Okay if that looks good then I would check the valve clearances. Should be .008 -.012 inches

I'm not sure what you mean by valve clearance? Not a small engine guy but a pretty good DIY person. Can you explain  about the valve clearance please.

The valves are operated by tappets that ride on the camshaft. Clearance between said tappet and valve is necessary to allow for expansion as the engine gets hot. It is also critical for engine performance.
The symptoms you describe have nothing to do with valve clearance, the issue is fuel starvation due to debris in the system.

I'm guessing he's had 2 different carbs with the same problem, looks like a plastic fuel tank and a hose. I'm on the Internet so if he says it's clean I have to take his word for it. He could have an air leak causing it to need choking. Valves not seating fully or improper clearance can cause problems due to compression loss among other things. Just my .02

Assuming this is a carb with adjustable jet it could be the main jet needs a small adjustment.

Also agree with Mikel1 that an air leak could be the problem. I have seen where someone has gotten carried away tightening mounting bolts for a carb or manifold and managed to warp things so that the gasket can no longer seal properly

Also it would be nice to know why the original carb was replaced.
