Craftsman Weedwacker Gas Trimmer 27cc - Shaft Issue?

This is the model with attachments capability (Model 316.71120)...this, of course, concerning the trimmer attachment.

It starts and runs--but the trimmer doesn't engage. Yep, the trimmer wheel spins freely by hand both ways, so no resistance there.  So as it is running, the trimmer wheel should spin slowly, even at idle.  And when I pull the throttle, it should engage and spin to the degree I pull the throttle.  HERE'S WHAT HAPPENS: I pull the throttle and the engine cuts out--not like it's choking out, but cuts out as if resistance from NOT being able to spin kills the engine.

So I removed the trimmer attachment to examine the "transmission" coupler--all seems well there. I started it once like that, and the engine (having no resistance of any attachment) raced like crazy.

Then I reattached the trimmer, started it, and...it would run, but still not spin.  Started it again, and the trimmer engaged momentarily!  It even let me rev it, but then the engine choked out.

Started it AGAIN...runs but won't spin.

Ideas?  Two years old, worked great first season, didn't use it at all last season.

I suspect the drive cable has failed, MTD p/n 753-05267. It is a shaft and tube assembly. If the gearbox is pooched MTD p/n 753-06882 is the complete assembly with head.

This unit has a clutch so it should not being spinning any attachment at idle unless the idle speed is too high (all three version of the 316-71120 have clutches). Also your description sound more like a failing carburetor.

Does your other attachments work properly? If it is only the trimmer attachment then I would be looking at it otherwise is engine related.
