No ouput from Generac svp5000t

I have a Generac svp5000t that is about 18 years old but had never been run. I recently put new oil in it and started it up for the first time. It started up fine but it is not putting out any voltage. I have checked all fuses and they are good. The only possible issue I see is a small bulge on the capacitor but I am not sure this would cause 0v on the output. Any ideas on the problem would be greatly appreciated.

With it sitting this long without being used the alternator rotor probably has loss all of it residual magnetism. With this in thought try flashing the rotor field to re-magnetize the rotor.

Honestly I don't see a capacitor in the electrical diagram for this generator but I do see a varistor.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have attached a picture of the capacitor. I tried to flash the rotor field using the method described below and still no output. Any ideas?

Step 1
Stop the generator motor if it is running. Open the chuck on the battery drill and insert the 1/4-inch threaded rod. Tighten the chuck. Open the chuck on the electric drill and insert the other end of the rod, then tighten the chuck.

Step 2
Plug the electric drill into the generator outlet. Set the electric drill direction switch to forward and the battery drill direction switch to reverse.

Step 3
Start the generator engine and allow it time to warm up. The engine should run smoothly with the choke in the off position.

Step 4
Ask a second person to hold the battery drill while you hold the electric drill. Both persons should hold their drill firmly with both hands. Squeeze the trigger on the battery drill and the electric drill. As the battery drill spins the electric drill, the electric drill will generate current and flash the field windings on the generator.

Step 5
Release the trigger on the electric drill and on the battery drill when you feel sudden resistance. The generator is now generating electricity, and the electric drill motor is attempting to turn in the forward direction while the battery drill is turning it in the reverse direction.

First the capacitor shown should not have that bulge seen in the pic.

Second can you give us the model number from the serial number tag as the diagram for the Generac svp5000t that i look didn't have this capacitor shown but there are several versions of this generator. I need to get the right electrical diagram in front of me to look at.

The drill method only works if the drill is a permanent magnet version as ther got tot be magnetic field to generate electrical power from the drill. Here I use a 12v battery to flash the rotors but I need to know the actual setup to know if is possible with the your generator setup..

Thanks again for the quick reply. I have attached a picture of the model tag as well as some schematics from the manual.

Okay this a synchronous alternator setup. First replace the capacitor since it has that abnormal budge.

The following is how you restore residual magnetism from the service manual.

Restoring Residual Magnetism:

Should only be carried out when test results show zero voltage and no open circuits are found on the alternator, panel and associated wiring.

To restore residual magnetism we pass 12V DC through the power windings by connecting a battery directly to the outlet sockets.

It is important to immobilize the engine by removing the spark plug lead from the spark plug.

1. Immobilize the engine.
2. Connect a 12 Volt battery directly to the outlet sockets (polarity is not important)
3. Turn the engine over. Note: 4 complete pulls of the recoil or approximately 3-4 seconds on the starter motor.
4. Remove the battery and connections.
5. Replace the spark plug lead.
6. Start the engine and measure output.
7. If the fault is loss of residual magnetism, output should be restored.

Thanks. Would part number 0G5958A work for the replacement capacitor? Is there one closer to the original specs? Otherwise I will see if I can find one with similar specs.

Your diagram indicates that you need 35 uF capacitor and the 0G5958A is a 59 uF capacitor according to part look at Jack's Website.

So the diagram says 35uF but the capacitor I pulled from the unit is actually 45uF. Looks like PG079102 may be the one I am looking for?
