5.5 briggs and stratton popping

I have a 5.5 briggs model 10t802 that is making a popping noise from the exuast and it runs rough even if there is no load on the motor. I just replaced the whole carb, air filter and spark plug. I do not know what the popping noise is I kind of think it could be a valve issue but not sure. Thanks

When does the popping begin? Have you tested the compression?

It's right after it warms up. It's fine for a minute but when it gets warmer the popping gets worse and then it starts surging. But it hasn't stalled it will keep running

If you take off the air filter temporarily, does the popping lessen, get worse or is there no difference? Any smoke accompanying the popping?Trying to narrow it down. The rest of the model #'s on engine would also be helpful.

The popping gets worse as it warms up. There's no smoke I did not try it with the air filter off

The exhaust heats up quickly and parts expand when warming up. Taking off the air filter is an effort to make sure fuel isn't igniting at the muffler. Was trying to rule out fuel as a problem. A leak down tester would quickly show you if valves are properly sealing. You could also pull the head and check them. You can check the valve clearances.

You mentioned that you replaced the carb.  You might check to see if the diaphragm is against the tank or the carb.  It should be against the tank.  Put an extra twist on those screws when you put it back in.  You could just be leaking air across the diaphragm.   This recently happened to me.  The engine was popping like a bad diaphragm.  I replaced the diaphragm and gasket.  It still popped only worse.  I rechecked my gasket and diaphragm.  They were correct so I gave a extra twist when tightening the screws.  Problem solved.
