briggs and stratton 19 hp runs crappy and keeps fouling plugs

model #917289223 engine model, type and code #31h777  0202e1   021030ze Carburetor was leaking gas into oil and fouled out the plug so I ordered a new carburetor from amazon #594601 carburetor. Installed new carburetor ,changed oil twice and changed oil filter, cleaned spark plug and reinstalled same e3-20 plug. Now every time i start it runs like crap but runs. sounds like it wants to die but doesn't. I then pulled plug and it was covered with black soot. I then cleaned plug again and same thing happened. not quite sure why it keeps fouling the plug. I would like to find problem before I start putting new plugs in just to find there fouling. any help would greatly appreciated.

One thing is that you have the wrong carburetor. 594601 is primary for the 33 cu in engines. You have a 31 cu in engine. The IPL indicates the 31H777-0201-E1 with a date code 021030** uses the 792358 which has been superseded to 594593.

The jetting will be wrong and too rich. Most likely you have a 1.15mm jet when you should have a 1.11mm jet. And then if you are above 3500 feet above sea level the jetting even needs to be smaller.

Hopefully you didn't buy a clone on top of it.

my numbers are 31h777   0202E1    021030ZE when i searched for the carburetor they said it was 594601.. so your saying 593594? ok cause i was told that the nikki and albro were interchangeable thats why i ordered 594601

The Walbro from Briggs that fit the older engine was superseded to the Nikki carburetor.

I can only go by what Briggs provides me as what your is to have on it. Of the numbers listed have been superseded but just not to the 594601.

searspartsdirect says they will not guarantee the fit if i order 594593 and not the one its calling for on there system so im gonna go to a local dealer and let him order it.

First Sears doesn't make the Craftsman you have. It is made by AYP (American Yard Products) which is owned by Husqvarna. The engine was manufactured by Briggs and Stratton. The hydrostatic transaxle is made by Tuff Torq.

Whoever you was talking to at Sears is wrong about their site as I looked up your engine on searpartsdirect and it does list the PN 594593 I gave you. Plus I would rather trust the Briggs Dealer Power Portal site as they are the manufacture of the engine anyway. Then I go through the Briggs Power Distributor site which gives me the PN supersedes when needed.

I seldom buy any parts from Sears as I tend to used the manufacture parts distributors. This way I get parts near dealer cost even though I am independent repair shop. This allows me to make more profit without over charging the customer (stay withing the MSRP), plus be competitive with the other local shops.

No reason to overpay for parts when you don't have to. But I have fallen victim to clones and sub standard aftermarket parts but I have learned to stay away from most of them; unless, it is a trusted supplier. Even then they screw up at times which why I had to throw out $1000 in belts last June because they all were too short and didn't OEM specs.

Hey guys, I have an update for the fouling spark plug on the briggs and stratton 19hp engine. after trying  two different carbs, adjusting throttle linkage, adjusting governor, checking valves, replacing breather hose, new plugs, etc..... I am embarrassed to say I put the gasket that comes with the new carburetor on the wrong side of carb. I  don't know why i didn't see it. oh well  It runs like a charm now.
P.S  the carb # 594601 is on the machine and it runs great even thought briggs and stratton said it wouldn't work I also have carb # 594593 just in case this one acts up.
 engine # 31h777 0202e1 021030ze
Thanks again for all suggestions

Tnx  for the update. I would not though about that as I normally doing my own work and have learned to pay close attention the setup plus checking against the IPLs.

Glad you got it working.
