Ingersol-rand 27hp

I have this Compressor left over from my Grandfathers business in the 60'. I need to know if I can use a 110v Motor to turn this monster. If not...then what should I be looking for? I would prefer a direct drive with no clutch assembly. I don't have 220 out in the Barn.

I haven't seen a direct setup on electric powered compressors. I have only seen belt drive compressors even in a commercial setup.
 
And if it is 27hp then there is not anything even in 220V that drive it as you are pretty limited to 5 hp max electric motor on a 220 circuit. It will take three phase power to going beyond 5 Hp. This why I install 220 (240) to my shop as I have a 5hp driven compressor. Even then it pulling 15+ amps @ 240 which means it would have pulled at least 30 amps @ 120v
 
Maybe some else here have seen something different.

You don't need a clutch with a compressor, the unit will have an unloader which stops the pump operating when it reaches a predetermined pressure. As AVB says a 115VAC motor will not drive it, anything that big will need at least 220VAC and probably 3 phase which few homes have. Best to sell it intact if it is functional.

I had been looking for this post and just could'nt find it.  I understand about the need for 3 phase. Can I run it with an engine and if so what hp engine would I need? Yes it is Belt driven but can I attach a Crankshaft directly to the Compressor Crank. What I'm having a hard time with is finding the right engine that will not produce to high of an rpm even at an idel.( I had been thinking of using a 1928 Chevy 4 cyl.) But a Small Engine at the right hp (may) might work. It's a project I'd like to win on since I would like to have air through-out the barn and be able to sand-blast as well.

Your title says it had a 27 hp, go with something close to that. An aircooled engine would be a far better bet. Lighter, more compact and easier to hook up plus parts are readily available. The belt drive will allow you to run the engine and pump at the speeds they are designed for, large direct drive compressors do exist but are designed as a unit for specific applications. Keep it simple.

Also would need to provide a throttle control so the throttles down once the preset max pressure is reach and then throttle back up at the low pressure kick in pressure is reach. This would also require a way to bleed off pressure from the pump while idling or you simply blow things up.
 
It is best to work with an air compressor provider that can help you determine the components that you would for the conversion.

It must have or at least had an unloader. An air throttle is a nice feature but not necessary. an unloader
