B&S 44N8770005G1 engine surging on a Husqvarna GT52XLSi tractor.

Hello
I am having constant surging issues on my 3year old Husqvarna GT52XLSi garden tractor with a Briggs and Stratton 44N8770005G1 engine. It happened about a year ago and then it “went” away on its own. Problem returned this year when I ran out of gas and refilled it.
When it’s idling, the governor goes crazy up and down. I brought it back to the dealer and was told the carb needs to be replaced and are asking 300+$. It’s got less then 200 hrs on it. Research showed that bad gas, spark plugs, fuel and air filter, bad/dirty carb could all be the problem. I changed all those parts except the carb so far. The fuel is always fresh since I use the tractor year round so the gas never sits for more than 2 or 3 weeks. I even use it to plow my driveway in the winter.
I also drained all the gas and filled it with 93 octane.
Used sea foam into the air intake like instructed by the dealer.
The sea foam worked for a minute and it ran normal (no surging) till it burned out, then it went back to surging.
Also, when I start to ride it it seems to become a little better but the surging will continue but not as much.
When I engage the blades it almost goes to normal (no surging), but you can still hear the engine is not running smooth.
My next step is to clean and rebuild the carb. I just ordered the rebuild kit so it’ll be a few days. Any suggestions till then.
Also any help with the carb assembly is appreciated. Thanks..
Luke.

You are on the right track. Try Seafoam in the tank before you tear anything apart.

Also can be the static governor adjustment or even that the idle speed set too low. I had some that I couldn't remove all the idle/off load surging until I increase the minimum idle speed. I know that sounds strange but these carburetors can close the throttle plate too much at idle causing starvation.

Being a Nikki carburetor is also can be the main jet o-ring has loosen/harden so it may also need replacing. They are not included in the carburetor repair kit and must ordered separately. Inspect the fuel bowl gasket before installation bad for defects using a magnifying glass. I have received a few that were defective.

Thanks for the info guys. Unfortunately I’ve been using sea foam in the gas as instructed by the dealer for a few weeks now and no change.
I’ll check for the idle setting but from what I read the carb is factory preset and cannot be adjusted. And I can’t find any schematics on this carb (b&s 597128). As for the seals and o-ring I’ll have to order those I guess.
Appreciate all the help

All you will find is a view in the IPL which isn't what you looking for.

Carburetor kit PN 594212 which is superseded to 84001917. SRP is $75.
The needle valve o-ring is not available through Briggs as a separate item. It is however is through Kawasaki. Just so tiny that you may want to ordere more then one as it is easy to lose it.

Exactly.... so what is the size because I bought a master pack of o-rings while back to fix my chainsaws and nail gun and trimmer and leaf blower..... but I can’t find the size anywhere for this Nikki carb

Ok so I’m going with my old man advice....for now... run tractor for a few minutes. Disconnect fuel line from carb, spray in carb cleaner there, shoot in compressed air (gently so u don’t blow seals off... lol), let sit, shoot again, and repeat.

You can try but from my 10 yrs of experience working on these Nikki carburetors it is not going to fix a bad o-ring seal which causing the main jet to be loose. Besides carb cleaner will destroy rubber seals include your float needle Viton rubber tip plus damage the plastic internal carburetor parts.

Okay the size is 4 mm OD CS 0.7 mm 2.6 mm ID. It is very, very, doubtful any generic o-ring kit will have this size. Kawasaki PN 92055-7013 or JD M153076.

Will definitely look into that. So far slightly better with the cleaner and air into the gas inlet. Will try a few more times. If no go, I guess rebuild or new carb.... will go to look for those rings tonight.
Thank you
