Low compression on echo BP-580t

I have an echo BP-580t backpack blower that I purchased via auction that appeared new, or with very little use. I cannot get it to fire, even adding a little ether.  After checking the spark which is good I performed a compression test and it's only reading around 75. I believe it should be around 125.
 
I'm not very familiar with 2 stroke engines but I believe it's a transfer type versus a reed type engine. Does the low compression ratio indicate bad rings, or is there something else I'm missing. I'm guessing the low compression is the problem with it not firing one bit!

Remove the muffler and have a look at the piston through the port, if it is badly scarred you have found your answer.
It may have been straight gassed but have a shop pressure test it before tearing things apart. An air leak will cause that too. And leave the ether on the shelf, it is very hard on 2 stroke engine seals.

Could be a plugged spark arrester but usually a low reading like that indicates straight gassing on a fairly new unit.
If straight gassed and if you are willing to put in a little over $200 in parts you better off just short blocking with SB1116 as PNC and gaskets separately are nearly that much.
 
As said stay away from starter fluids and just use what the engine are intended to run on as a primer mixture.

Thanks guys,   I did as Roy suggested and removed the muffler. The piston is scarred and after some additional disassembly the rings are frozen and the cylinder walls are scarred also. The short block is a possibility but I may just scrap or sell for parts. I'm not sure it's worth fixing. Not that I'm surprised but the short block is about 2/3rd's the cost of a new unit!

That why I tell most customers to just call it and buy a new one. I think this what the manufactures want anyway as by the time labor is added it cost more than a new unit anyways.
