Husqvarna 272xp chain brake engages while cutting

My husky 272xp chain brake continuously engages over and over while cutting or even when not cutting. Had to zip tie the handle to cut with it which I dont recommend doing. Any ideas as to how to remedy this or is a new assembly needed? Also it gives to much now when cutting. Is this the dampeners that need replacing and will they cut down the flexing of the saw in the middle?

The saw is at least 20 years old, sounds like it needs a little tlc. The tank mounts need to be replaced. The brake assembly is serviceable but iirc needs a special tool to reset the spring on reassembly. IPL's are readily available online.

Ok so tank mounts sound easy enough. Not sure about brake assembly parts. Best to get whole new assembly or just certain part or parts? It’s a damn fine running saw just needs a little tlc like you stated.

Personally I would just with a complete chain brake assy as the cover with this much age will be heavily worn. PN 503736601

Good deal I will go that route on chain brake cover. Is there any good info on best way to install tank vibration dampeners out there? I saw a YouTube video but the guy had the entire saw disassembled block and all out. Has to be an easier method I would think than that.

The tank is not that difficult to remove, you don't need to completely strip the saw.

I finally got around to changing out the dampeners and that stiffened up the saw nicely, but the brake is still about an inch from the handle and is not usable. Can't even hardly get you hand in between brake and handle. What is the next thing to look at? Possibly new side cover with brake assembly?

Pull the cover off the chain brake mechanism and compare the assembly to the parts
    diagram:

If your not terribly mechanically inclined, it'd be cheaper for you to just replace the entire mechanism
vs having a shop diagnose it then do the repair..

Yeah It got put to the side and didn’t get touched for a long time. I put in the anti vibration dampeners and threw a rebuild kit at the tillotson carb and now I’m stuck at the end of the project with this brake problem. I thought for sure after fixing the over flexing due to couple of the dampeners being sheared in 1/2 I would be good, but nope still can’t get my hand on handle without tripping the brake lever.

Was it always like that while in your possession?

    Did you buy it new?

No it was given to me and it kind of slowly happened I guess. I used it for couple of years before the flexing and brake issues happened. I’m thinking just buy a new or aftermarket cover and see if that fixes it. Just hate to throw parts at it if that isn’t the issue but can’t think what else it could be.

That is the entire assembly at the link I sent you.

A new entire assembly would be an easy fix.

There isn't anything else that attaches to or could cause it to fail (short of
    issues inside the old one)

It’s a pricey part I see after market cheaper but probably not near as good as OEM. It functions well. Will stop the sprocket immediately when tripped. It’s just so close to my hand that it trips the brake while cutting.

You can pull yours apart and compare to the diagram for any missing parts, etc.

Being an older, great running machine, I'd repair that correctly as it'll likely outlast you..

IMO, injury to my hand/arm, etc, from a cheapo Chinese knock off part isn't worth it.
Your co-pay at the hospital would cost more than the new part.

    Just my 2 cts... ;)

Yeah I think you’re right. If I can’t figure it out I will find a OEM replacement.
