Rope won't pull

Hi all, I have a Yard machines 25 ton splitter, has a Honda GCV 160 engine. Yesterday it was 2 degrees here and I needed to split a few logs. Started it up, it ran for 2 minutes { was warming it up, i did not split at this point} and the engine began running very sluggish and stalled. went to pull rope again and it is completely locked up, wont pull even a hair. Took splitter in basement where its 65 degrees, removed spark plug, and sprayed fogging oil in cyclinder, sat overnight. This morning the rope still wont pull. Hydrolocked maybe?

Did you try removing the spark plug and pulling?

Can you remove the pull starter and try moving the flywheel by hand.
If need be, disconnect the engine from the log splitter and see if the engine turns over or is still locked up. We're trying to determine if it's the engine locked up or the log splitter itself...

I gather you checked for engine oil in the engine?

I don't know what safety devices there are on the machine, but I'd look at those to make sure their not engaging and stopping the engine from spinning over.

Yes I did remove the plug, same thing still wont pull. Its been running just fine all along. I've maintained it well & kept up with oil changes. Ran fine just last weekend. I'm willing to bet the oil was just too thick from the 2 degree temp yesterday & caused the issue. I suppose my next move would be to remove recoil assy & gas tank to get to the flywheel and try turning manually?

Not personally familiar with this machine but first thing I would want to do would be to disconnect the hydraulic pump from the motor. This would let you know if problem is in the motor or pump.

Hate to even think it but I'd be leaning towards a seized rod in the engine due to lubrication problem from cold temperature.

Hope I'm wrong! Good luck and please let us know what you find.

Haven't had much time yet to get to the flywheel to try and turn manually but I did pull off the valve cover and a bunch of oil drained out, probably about 2 or 3 cups full if not more. Oil looked clean and did not have any milky white coloring so I don't think water got in there. Have to figure out how to disconnect the hydraulic pump from the engine.

Got down to flywheel, turned manually. At first it took some slight effort but quickly freed up. Heard some pressure release. Rope pulls fine now. Have to get some RTV gasket goo for the valve cover, refill with oil and give her a go. Probably when it stalled the other day it was during or just before the exhaust stroke and trapped oil and pressure in there who knows. Guessing I should use a lighter weight oil like 5w30 during the cold months or should I stick with the recommended 10w30? I should probably just use the 10w30 and store the splitter in the basement where its warm

I'm wondering if the carb float stuck open causing an hydraulic lock.

If temps are that cold, 5W30 would be fine...

Congrates on getting it running again..
