Starter kickback

I have an old Montgomery Ward snowblower with a Briggs 190402-0653 model flathead, it sat from 2006 until last year when I got it running. I didn't really have this issue last year at least not as bad, it kicked at me one time but still managed to start and run fine. This year I went to get it running again and it's kicking back every single time. I went for the usual culprit the flywheel key it seems completely in tact(ordered new one just to be sure). This model has points and from what I've read online it should be somewhere from .017" to .020" in which mine is right on .019". I've heard of valves causing an issue on OHV motors but I haven't really found anything about these older flatheads. Any suggestions help, pretty new to this small engine stuff I primarily work on V6/V8 motors.

You may want to check the valve clearances.  Their accessible by removing the rear breather cover (under the intake manifold).

A "leak down test" would also show if you have a valve leaking/not closing fully..  I don't see a compression release on your engine using the parts list below..

I'll check the valves, I do not have a compression gauge so I'm not sure if I can really test that. From the way it spins over I can confirm it doesn't have a compression release it's pretty solid.

So, I changed the flywheel key. While I was in there I took a look at the points they're fine. I checked the gap they were completely in spec. I checked the valve lash and to my surprise both valves were perfectly in spec. I adjusted the gap between the coil and the flywheel after finding it was about half the gap it should've been. I inspected the valve and piston movement when I had the head off to replace the head gasket and everything worked as expected. I attempted to fire up the engine today and it continued to kick at me. Anyone have any ideas? My thinking is possibly a faulty coil? I really have no idea I've checked seemingly everything.
