Snapper model 281016BE
I bought this mower recently, and it ran great until I got the blades spinning and ran over some leaves. It stalled, died and wouldn’t start back up. What I’ve done since then: Replaced spark plug Replaced battery Replaced blade safety switch Replaced fuel filter Replacing seat safety switch soon Replacing solenoid soon. Is there anything else I should look at to get this up and running? I pulled the cord in the back to try that out today and I got a little spark and a small backfire, didn’t get it fired up though. When I turn the key there is just a single knock/click and that’s it.

Is this a 10 HP Briggs flat head engine? With the spark plug out, does it spin over normally? Check voltage at the solenoid when cranking. Should be roughly 11 volts at both sides (battery, and to starter) when cranking. You can also jump those terminals with a HEAVY wire, (which may get hot). To test the starter, you can run Battery voltage straight to the starter solenoid see of it turns over. (By passing EVERYTHING) . .

I’ll go pick up a multimeter today, they’re like $12 at my Home Depot. How do I run battery voltage straight to the solenoid if you don’t mind me asking? Sorry, this is my first riding mower.

You can use an automotive jumper cable.. Hook one end to the Positive battery terminal, then briefly to the starter. Your starter is already grounded to the machine.. It WILL spark but should spin the starter and engine over.. .

So just a quick update - Using the pull cord, I got it started and I found the engine keeps seizing up and I gave to use a wrench to free it up, with spark plug out as well too. So I have to fix that issue too. I will test the electrical as well because I still only get a single click from the solenoid, battery is at 12.65 volts.

Disconnect any belts / anything attached to the lower crankshaft-To rule that out. Can you post the engine model #?

You have a mechanical oil pump so I don't believe the internals of the engine are seizing up. Especially since you can free it up and start it again... As stated earlier, remove all belts, PTO, etc from the end of the crankshaft. I suspect your issue is there, especially since you started having the issue after running over leaves... Something is binding up the engine... You can check voltage on the other side of the starter relay, should be close to the same (key in crank position), I suspect you won't find an issue electrically... .

I appreciate this knowledge, I’ll take these belts off as soon as I’m able. I am to take the belts off and see if it freely spins without binding?

That is correct.. You can also try starting it with the belts safely tucked aside.. .

This sounds good, thank you. I’ll give it a shot and update here with what happens. Might be a day or two whenever I get the chance to do it. I appreciate it
