Kohler 5400 18 hp popping sound

My Craftsman lawn tractor with a Kohler 5400 18 hp engine makes a popping noise out of the exhaust when shutting down. this Has been happening since I bought this tractor about 3 months ago. Any idea on the cause?

    That is likely afterfire, cool fuel rich air is drawn in as the engine with no spark is spooling down. It hits a hot muffler and BANG! Try letting it idle before shutting off. Also, the solenoid if equipped on the bottom of the carburetor may be sticking open.
