Briggs IN-TEK 21hp v-twin engine has no oil filter, just a ‘cap’. Can that be swapped out with a filter?

Briggs IN-TEK 21hp v-twin engine has no oil filter, just a ‘cap’. Can that be swapped out with a filter?

I replaced a Briggs IN-TEK 21hp v-twin in my old Yardman mower with (I thought) an Identical engine from an identical mower, but the engine has no oil filter, just a ‘cap’. Can that cap unthread and be swapped out with a filter, or no? I’d prefer, obviously, to have a filter. Any advice would be appreciated. Thx, kg

We will the engine model and type codes to look up the engine. But so far I haven't seen a Briggs with an oil pump to have just cap over the oil mount.

It’s a Model 40777 Type 0184 E1 Code 011005YG , and I’ve found a parts list online, but can’t figure if this cap is a thread on or what. The other motor was in an identical Yardman 42” riding mower, and looked like an exact twin (no pun intended), but had a typical screw on filter. Didn’t want to muscle the cap with my 640 Channel-loks trying to unscrew it (did try it just a little), in case it doesn’t unscrew, or is a left hand thread or some such. Never seen anything like it! -kg

Here’s a link to the parts manual (it wasn’t necessarily secure, so I didn’t want to try to copy and attach)

The engine without the filter won't have an oil pump so the filter would be of no value. The block has a cover because it is the same casting.

As I said I have personally not seen this setup so just going the by IPL. Must be an equipment OEM special application.

Roy, If reading the IPL correctly it has to have an oil pump as there is no oil slinger type governor present. If the OP looks on the bottom of the sump there should be oil pump (Gerotor) cover. Remove the three screws and check for the oil pump. This is the only way to know for sure. Note you can not simply remove the Gerotor cover while the engine is install as if it is present it and the pump shaft will simply fall out. Also the oil must be remove most times; although, with the engine sitting on it front side (cylinder heads up) you may be able to it with oil still present.

As for the cover it is screwed on and it would normal RH threads. IF you do have a Gerotor present you need to remove the filter cover and add a 690954 oil filter nipple so you can add an oil filter since the filter cover as the nipple built-in.

    Image oil filter cover.
