Ignition Coil Questions

My Snapper with a B&S 128607/0113E1 - 040726PS engine doesn't start.  I placed a tester between the coil wire and the plug.  It would not light.  I pulled the ignition coil and tested with a multimeter set to 20k Ohms.  I got a reading of 4.62 from the wire to ground and from the wire to the kill switch terminal.

Concerning the coil, I could find no specs online for resistance readings; therefore I don't know if the coil is good or bad.  Also wrt the coil, I could find no markings except the numbers 0410 stamped into the material covering the coil winding.  I also could find nothing online that would better identify this coil for replacement ordering.  Further, if the coil is OK or if I buy a new one, I need to get the right gap between the coil and the flywheel.  I could find not spec for that distance.  Can anyone tell me what to set it to?  I can always start with a business card but would rather set it with feeler gauge.

As to other possible causes for the coil not firing, I'm at a loss.  The magnets in the flywheel are strong when I place a screwdriver over them.  There is not any significant rust.

Fuel is ethanol free gasoline with stabilizer.  The mower was starting and running fine in November (~ 90 days ago).  The carb bowl fills and the carb components are not gummy or stuck.

Plug is correct and not fouled on inspection.  It is sort of a light brown color and the tip is not corroded or rusted.  I have not replaced the plug or fuel because I found no spark.

Any other suggestions or information would be gratefully received.

Welcome! Don't overthink it, we are not dealing with the space shuttle. Install the coil setting the clearance with a business card. With the ground wire unhooked pull the rope. If no spark the coil is pooched, replace it. If good there is a problem with the interlock system.

Engine 128607-0113-E1 040726PS but I have never a PS factory code before. Manufactured 2004 July 26.

The coil is PN 802574 superseded to 590454.

As far as testing they can't be tested reliably with an ohms meter due the way the electronics are connect internally. Only a very expensive coil tester can do this. So it is most a go/no go test method as Roy describes. I can tell that the 4.62 ohms reading on the primary is high as it is usually around 1 ohm but even a coil that reads right ohms wise can still be bad electronics wise.

Thank you, both, for the help.  That part number might solve my problem.

I haven't been able to find much online about this engine.  Does it have points and a condenser?  I ask because the spark wire comes directly to the plug from the ignition coil leading me to believe that they are somehow incorporated in the coil electronics.

It is a Briggs Magnetron coil which everything is in the coil pack and no points or condenser.

You should be able to find the engine's IPL by using 128607-0113-E1
