HSSK50 67317M intake valve?
I'm stuck. My Nomo snowblower ate a nail set and came to a stop and hasn't started since. The flywheel key was fine but I replaced it anyway. I'm getting exhaust out the carb so I replaced the intake valve with a new one and lapped it. But the gap is too big:.015 or so. I can't make the valve longer so what next? Camshaft is lined up with the crankshaft mark and I have a new head gasket. Why else would I be getting exhaust out the carb? Thanks...

Excessive valve clearance will not cause exhaust out the intake; unless, the exhaust valve is not opening at all. From your description you had intake valve problem cause by a foreign object being ingested so I would be taking a serious look at the valve seat.

I guess my response did not take so trying it again...the nail set only got as far as the auger and stopped the machine. Like a lawn mower hitting a rock, so nothing got into the cylinder. The seats looked fine. This has all the flags of a timing issue but the flywheel key is new and the valves are adjusted except that the pesky intake valve gap is too great...with a new lapped valve! When I shoot starter fluid in the carb it wants to backfire. Can't get it to catch. Compression is close to 0 but I'm assuming a valve is open when it shouldn't be.

Okay Tecumseh engines are before my time repair wise. I started back in 2009 when they were becoming none existence in my area. BUt they should still be just any other L-head (side valve) engine. Well this is a mess. Did you compare the new intake valve to the old one? If the valve seat is in place correctly the valve gap should be right; unless, it is the wrong valve. With that excess clearance the valve won't open; unless it is hanging open. But is something I would have thought you would seen when you did the valve lapping. As for the compression being near zero, probably the best thing is to do a leak down test to find where the leak is actually at. As you suggest it might be a timing issue as I don't know if the crankshaft gear is keyed version or not. Maybe Roy will chime on this. The problem is one that I personally need my hands to troubleshoot. As I would probably see the problem easily then.

I have never seen a crankshaft gear that moved. To check the timing bring the piston to top dead centre on the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve should be closing as the intake opens.

Going to try a leak down test w a hacked compression tester

I am still at a loss as to how an engine could eat a nail set.

Pretty simple, it got stuck between the auger and the housing, stopping the auger. I bent it getting it out, so it was really stuck. I assumed at most I might have sheared key, but it's got me stuck now!

So I did the leakdown test and the air is barreling out of the carb, clearly the intake valve not closing. This is new valve (from Jacks), lapped it and it looked ok. May I need to take a closer look at the seat.
Is there any chance at all that the lobes on the camshaft can move? Are those pressed on?

The camshaft appear to be a forged version and pressed together.

Is there a way to measure the angles of the lobes to make they are true? The valves seem to move properly, but intake valve is letting all the compression out.

so finally got back into the valves and the intake valve was sticking open. I guess that's what happens when you don't own a spring compressor and you use plastic ties instead! I reinstalled the intake valve and all is well. The leakdown test was the definitive test, thanks for the help!
