Tecumseh HM80 Wood Chipper Electric Start, Stator Q

So, I noted in the package instructions and wiring, the charge coil is connected directly to battery power in the wiring, ie the battery side of the solenoid in this case.  There is no rectifier or voltage regulator.

Does this sound correct?

I have never seen an HM80 with a DC charging system, I wonder if it has a diode in the charge wire. What is the spec number?

Well, the chipper was in bad shape when I got it, lots of missing wiring.  I have rewired it to include a diode.

Ok, I have this HM80 Tecumseh engine running and working well w/Electric Start.  Its all on a 1988 Troy Bilt Super Tomahawk wood chipper.  Lady that owns this had it in a garage since 1989!  It was a pleasure to revive it.

    I used a 611093 flyweel w/ring gear(from HMSK80 Snow King Blower) and 611111 alternator.

    Next problem:
I am reading 26V A/C from the stator.  But, when I hook up my Briggs/Stratton diode, drops to
10.6V or so D/C and high rpm.  Any suggestion for a better diode for this combo? Or is this 611111 alternator capable of generating enough power?

Do I need the higher output stator or is there a correct diode combo I can use?
