Briggs & Stratton 675EXI series lawnmower engine - need help diagnosing

Bought a Jonsered self propelled lawnmower with electric start in may 2019 and hadn't used it much due to illness.  This spring the grass was tall and I hit a big, flat rock... now the Briggs & Stratton engine is making a noise.  I thought that the shaft would have taken the hit, but sound like the engine did.  I suspect that I'll have to replace the engine, but thought I'd ask if there was anything I can look for that would cause a noise after this accident.  Any suggestions?
Thanks.

The blade is likely bent and hitting the deck. Remove it along with the broken hub then, with the spark plug disconnected, have a friend slowly pull the rope while you watch the end of the shaft. It shouldn't wobble.

Sorry... I should have mentioned that we checked the blade and it looks fine... not hitting the deck.  The sound is coming from the top of the engine.   Weird.

It is as it is usually the PTO that takes the punishment. But anything is possible though remote.

Try removing the engine shroud and rotate the engine through to see if anything is obvious as the problem. This provided you hear it while cranking.
