Differences in engine spec numbers

Greetings all,

First time posting. Thanks in advance for any help.

My organization uses an '08 Cub Cadet UTV. Engine air filter is mounted underneath the machine. When using off road, presumably a stump/stick ripped the air filter cap off, and the filter fell out. The machine was run for an unknown amount of time without the filter, and now the engine won't start. Brought it in to the local dealer, and they said the engine was dead, and due to dirt infiltration to all parts of the engine, an overhaul wasn't possible.

The engine is LH775-0017. I was quoted roughly $5k for the engine alone, and confirmed this from several other dealers. However, I've seen other LH775s (listed with or without a different spec number) for $1,900. I am not very knowledgeable about engines specifically, and don't feel comfortable tearing one down. However, I do feel reasonably confident in my mechanical skills to replace an engine.

My question for you is this:
I know that spec numbers can change wiring harness, crankshaft size, and perhaps other fitment specs. Is there any place I can look up the exact difference between spec numbers? If I know what the differences were, and perhaps, some of the parts were easy enough to swap over from the existing dead engine, I could consider buying the significantly cheaper engine as a replacement.

I know very little here, so any comments or suggestions on the above thought process are also appreciated.

You might reach out to Kohler itself and see about a new engine...

Looking at the site, the engines are closer to $1900:

You'll have to call them for your specific needs..   5K sounds quite a bit high..

Thanks SRTsFZ6. Yes, I reached out to Kohler and they just recommended the replacement engine with proper spec number for the machine.

Those engines in the links you provided are command engines currently in production. My understanding is that the Aegis engines were discontinued due to changes in emissions regs a while back. Because they've been discontinued for so long, there's a very small supply and thus the higher price. I'm not sure why, however, the LH775s I found were still $1,900 while the ones with the spec number for my machine are around $5k.

I might just be out of luck... it doesn't seem worth it to put a $5k engine in a 14 year old machine.
