Briggs 92508 -Oil Slinger
Hello- Can the oil slinger on a Briggs and Stratton 3.75HP engine move around? I reassembled the lawn mower engine and if it tilt the motor, I think I here it moving inside. No oil in it yet. Not sure if that's normal or not. Don't want to start it until I know for sure I didn't miss tightening something. I think it's a 3.75HP unit (on a 1970s John Deere Push Mower). Thank you!

Thanks for the quick reply. That's my problem:I have the exploded diagram and I put the oil slinger on the camshaft and then closed the case up. I think what I'm hearing is it moving back and forth (like a pendulum). It's not loose in there but I can't see anyway to hold it down. It didn't have a nut on it, just a hole for the camshaft to go through.

Your correct, there's nothing else to hold it. It just "stops" against the case. There's really not much else in there to come loose / mess up... You may try assembling with some tension on the pump(rubber band, ect) to keep it from moving and see if you still have the noise... (DON'T RUN IT)... If it's quiet, that must be the noise and you should be good. Of course, remove the rubber band before "real" assembly.. Please post back how it goes...

The diagram shows 2 "thrust washers" (part #69) per the link I posted above (on each side of the cam). I don't know if they apply to your engine as it shows a PTO...

Thanks for the reply -I didn't have any parts left over after disassembly so I'm thinking you're right that the PTO is different. I just assembled it all to make sure I didn't have anything left over and I don't have anything extra so if it was supposed to have more hardware, it didn't. I'm having some fun putting it back together. This is my first small engine rebuild (I'm more of a car guy) I'm only into it $40. The mower was sitting in a barn (literally) when I got it and looked like it was pretty rusty, broken etc. No spark, low compression etc. An old 1974 John Deere push mower. I took it all apart, cleaned it up (washed it up several times), honed the cylinder, checked the valve clearance etc. Now just painted it and will put the coil and points in some evening this week when I have time. I keep reminding myself to add oil so don't want to forget that at the last minute.

Well, it runs, just not very long. More work to do.

QUick update-It runs!!! I ended up buying a $20 Murray lawnmower off Kijiji. The tank and carb were a direct bolt in to the 1974. Just some slight changes needed. This carb now has a primer bulb so pushed that 3x and it started right up. FIrst time in decades I would think. All good now. It does blow some oil out the valve cover. I had removed the bit of foam or mesh that was in there so I'm wondering if that's the issue. I think I overfilled it initially so maybe that's what's happening. Advice welcome but the hard part can be crossed off.

That little filter, for the oil, slows down/catches oily fumes, etc from the crankcase...(not all like now-a days motors). Put that filter back in. dump excess oil out. The fumes coming out are likely from [piston ring blow by. Not unusual on an old engine with time on it... Just keep an eye on the oil level, maybe some Seafoam as well...

Yeah-I didn't change the rings after honing the cylinder smooth. Didn't want to spend that kind of cash. I'll dump some oil out and see if there's a difference. On the side mounted oil fill, is it supposed to be level to the top with oil or to the tip of a finger inside the hole?

Yes, it's very likely the rings are worn causing the blow by.. Oil (with no dip stick), should be up (even with) to the top of the access oil plug.
