14.5 HP B&S on a swisher trail mower, wiring for starter.

Hey folks, I've seen other threads sort of covering this but could use some clarification. I'm having trouble with getting the engine (287707-0225-01) to work with the original starter switch. I'm really looking for the simplest way to replace the switch, if needed, add a kill switch (some swishers had, some didnt). I have replaced the solenoid and re-installed wires as they were. No good. From what swisher tells me the 14.5 was not original in the year the mower was made (1999) and the engine must have been changed.

My real desire is a wiring schematic for that engine (not finding it for precisely that model#) and a down and dirty sketch to clarify what wires need to go where. Any help? Oh the swisher mower is a model UT1360. You can jump across and the engine will fire. Just looking for a way to safely start and stop it.

I found the wiring schematic for your machine (page 13):

Jumper the B and G wire seems to be the departure from what is there. Well that and a whole lot of red wires that I'm unsure of. I understand the large red wires to the battery and out to the solenoid on the other side. What should I be looking for representing the red from alternator and what is the one that looks to be a jumper from the s terminal to the wire marked to alternator. Is that a jumper from the switched side of the solenoid to the i post? It's a 4 wire solenoid. Thanks for your info.

Dunno, sounds a bit more more complicated than I've seen...

Thanks for the time you spent looking. Really! I have found the same and the wiring is not at all a match. It kind of looks like I'm going to have to volt/ohm meter everything and the same once it's hooked up to the switch. They sure dont make it easy.

This thing is still kicking my ***. I've taken the cover off the engine (First, it is a 287707 0225 01, OHV 14.5 hp engine with a carb solenoid). From the left (starter side) of the engine is a red wire with a diode. This I assume is the charge wire and goes to the battery side of the solenoid. Also from that side is a brown wire that goes all the way up to the front of the mower and to the ignition switch (I'm not positive where that should go). Running with the brown wire is a green wire that was to the S terminal of the solenoid and up to the ignition switch and onto the s post of the same. On the right (carb) side of the engine is a gray wire from the carb solenoid. Running with it along the same side is the black wire from the coil. As stated earlier, I am going to add a kill switch, splicing into that wire. What am I missing? I know the thing is getting spark as when I jumped across the solenoid after having sprayed starting fluid into the carb, it fired. So, spark for sure. I simply cant get the damned thing to engage the starter and release it once it's running. The real kick in the teeth is not finding a wring diagram that matches up to what I have or any powered wire with a fuse that might be blown. Someone has really jerry rigged this to the nth degree and I am to the point of saying F it and just creating my own wiring loom and connections. Suggestions as to what I need? Help before this old guy falls off the wagon.

    Thanks in advance

That carb solenoid needs 12 volts to open and let fuel flow. It often seizes up not allowing the engine to run.

You can by pass that solenoid by first removing it, then cut the plunger off completely. Re-install with no wiring to it as it's open all the time.

The only wire to the coil is the ground/kill switch wire.  If you disconnect it, it will not kill spark (by-passing all other safety's as well).

I don't know what color the charging line is but it's coming from under the flywheel.  Dunno if you have a separate VR...

So, to by pass and fully control the on/off spark, you can run a toggle, on/off switch direct from the coil (nothing else attached to the coil).  That will kill / not kill ignition.

If you can find the terminal at the ignition switch that activates when CRANKING, again, you can by pass the rest of the system and tie in a new starter solenoid. (From battery to starter, cranking signal to the solenoid)..

    .Hope this helps...

It does some in as much as it reaffirms a number of things I know are true. 1st the carb solenoid. Yes I can do that and that will definitely take that off the table as far as running but doesn't get to my real issue as far as I can tell. Not cranking. Just to make sure I jumpered the starter directly with starter fluid in the intake and it fired right up. So spark for sure. You mentioned the charging line. As far as I understand that would be the red wire with a diode coming from under the flywheel. The question about a separate "VR" is unfamiliar to me as I dont know what you mean by a "VR". There is also the green wire running from the ignition switch s post to the S terminal on the solenoid. So, in total we have 1.) the large battery wires to the solenoid and then out of it on the other side to the starter side. 2.) The green wire that runs from the switch to the solenoid S post. It is my belief that this is the trigger wire for the solenoid 3.) The red wire from under the flywheel that has a diode and is connected to the positive side of the battery at the large solenoid post (both it and the wire from the battery on the left side of the solenoid) 4.) the brown wire from under the flywheel that follows in the same conduit as the green wire to the switch. I'm not sure if it is connected properly to the switch. It is currently at the B post and that is where it was on the original switch. The other wires and it is literally all the wires on this thing are a grey wire to the fuel solenoid which is to the L terminal on the switch and the black wire coming from the coil which I assume would go to the G terminal on the switch? There is also a black wire from the fuel solenoid that goes to ground. I'm missing something basic here and I can feel it. Thanks again to any and all that chime in.

The black wire from the fuel solenoid just completes the circuit for that. As the solenoid will be disabled, the black isn't needed (cut off, leave, doesn't matter, it isn't doing anything)

If you have a test lamp and can probe into the ignition switch and find, when TURNED TO CRANK/START, that terminal, that's the trigger wire for the STARTER solenoid.

Just to clarify, the engine does NOT stay running when jumped?  With the kill wire disconnected (and now the carb solenoid disabled), it should start and run W/O starter fluid.

And VR is voltage regulator.  I've seen some with, most without.
