Gaskets on Kawasaki Fe120

Hi All, 
 
Wondering which way these carb / exhaust gaskets are intended to be installed. There seems to be 2 different materials/sides on these. One is much more plastic-y and smooth than the other. The other side is softer and more of a composite felt (not actually felt, but closest thing I can think of to describe it) like material.
 
How are these supposed to be installed? My thought is the smooth plastic-y side faces so it makes contact with metal - is that accurate?
