Help with K582 Crankshaft Endplay

Edit - I found the answer in another service manual.  As I suspected, the endplay is controlled by the ball bearing on some models.

I purchased a JD400 that has a K582 swapped in. I do not know the history, so it is possible some parts have been interchanged with the original K532.

Upon reassembly, when I go to set the endplay, it has a lot.  There were no shims on the crankshaft, but I found some.  Using the thinnest gasket, I think .020 or .023, I needed around .040 of shims, and that brought the endplay to .007.  Then when I went to put the circlip back on the crank, there isn't enough sticking out to install it.  Do certain models rely on just the ball bearing to control the crankshaft endplay, and I'm looking at perhaps the wrong instructions for a 582?  There is no thrust bearing on the flywheel side that I recall, just the bushing through the casting, so I don't understand how setting the endplay against that would be correct.

And for full disclosure, this is my son's project, and I'm just stepping in when he needs guidance so I'm not 100% familiar with everything.

As there's no room for the clip on that end, can you shim the other end of the crank?
